Release of New Single from Child Actress

(CALGARY, [August 18, 2023])—Today, Red Spade Records announced the second single Always Moving from Child Actress’ upcoming album. This release is accompanied with a new music video from the artist. Red Spade Records is also offering a limited run of single sided, hand etched lathe-cut records to accompany the release of the single. Each copy will include an artist-signed and hand-painted one of a kind watercolour painting. Once these [22] copies are sold, they will no longer be available. Pre-orders can be made at the www.redspaderecords.com.

In June, Red Spade Records announced the creation of a record label for the business. The announcement coincided with the release of the label’s first single Beloved for long-time client and Canadian recording artist Child Actress. “I am delighted to provide our next offering to the music business through Red Spade Records—the label,” said owner and president Robyn Raymond. “This is the next logical offering for our company and will help recording artists reach broader audiences more easily.” The first single was a resounding success and sold out in 48 hours. The transparent double sided lathe-cut picture disc was accompanied by one of a kind polaroids featuring art from the music video and were autographed by AITSO (the art director and photographer) and Child Actress.

In October, Red Spade will release Child Actress’ second album under the name Ancestor Worship. The follow-up to her 2017 release Milking a Dead Cow (Wyatt Records), Ancestor Worship will showcase a more thoughtful and precise version of her work. The sounds draw from a range of influences from Kate Bush, and Sparks to the Cure, and New Order. Kozak writes from the perspective of a young widow trying to get by among the living, and the themes of unbelonging and otherworldliness find their way through the lyrics and the swirling production, helped along by assistant producer Scott Monty Munro (Preoccupations).

Modern popular culture suffers from an obsession with youth—Child Actress gave herself this title as a  means of teasing this infatuation—though Rena Kozak, the creative force behind the project, is by no means an inexperienced artist. A veteran of the music industry as a producer and live sound engineer, Kozak has had a successful 22-year career on the production and engineering side of the music business while maintaining a body of work of her own songs as a creative outlet. In early 2012, her boyfriend passed away unexpectedly in his sleep beside her. Waking up to that loss changed the course of her life dramatically and has deeply affected her creative output. From that day onward, all her actions have been in some way informed by grief, and the music certainly is no exception. Originally from Calgary, Alberta, but now based out of Montréal, Quebec, Child Actress has maintained a connection to her roots with Calgary through collaborating with Red Spade Records.
