In October 2023, Rena released her second album under the name Child Actress - Ancestor Worship. The follow up to her 2017 release Milking a Dead Cow (Wyatt Records), Ancestor Worship will showcase a more careful and precise version of her work - the former having been, in her own words, “a spastic and urgent outpouring of my clumsy suffering”, the new album shines with more polished optimism and focused intent. The sounds draw from a range of influences from Kate Bush and Sparks to the Cure and New Order. And yet, the grief factor remains: “The concept for Ancestor Worship was to elaborate on the struggle to function as a young widow in the normal world, trying to thrive among the living while always having one eye looking a little bit behind the veil.” The themes of unbelonging, and otherworldlieness find their way through the lyrics and the swirling production, helped along on several songs by assistant producer Scott Monty Munro (Preoccupations).
